Staten Island Sealife Mosaic Fountain | Municipal Public Art by Allison Eden Studios
Inspired by the rich marine life of New York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean, this vibrant custom glass mosaic fountain transforms a public gathering space into an engaging work of civic art. Designed by Allison Eden Studios in collaboration with Mike Browne and Renata Sokolowski of NYC Parks, the large-scale installation celebrates Staten Island’s coastal identity through handcrafted mosaic depictions of native sea life.
Flowing organically throughout the cascading water feature are beautifully rendered striped bass, bluefish, sharks, sea turtles, jellyfish, coral, underwater vegetation, and ocean waves, each handcrafted from thousands of individually cut stained glass mosaic pieces. The brilliant shades of cobalt, turquoise, aqua, sapphire, and iridescent blues capture the movement of water while reflecting sunlight throughout the day, creating an ever-changing visual experience for visitors.
Designed to withstand the demands of a public outdoor environment, the mosaic integrates seamlessly with the fountain’s flowing water, demonstrating how handcrafted architectural art can enhance civic infrastructure while creating memorable community landmarks. The project serves as both public artwork and educational storytelling, celebrating the natural beauty and ecological importance of New York’s coastal waters.
For more than three decades, Allison Eden Studios has collaborated with municipalities, landscape architects, parks departments, architects, developers, and public art consultants to create one-of-a-kind glass mosaic installations for parks, plazas, transportation centers, waterfronts, schools, libraries, and civic spaces. Every project is handcrafted in the Brooklyn studio and fabricated into precision-engineered interlocking sections for long-lasting durability and seamless installation.
