For this custom residential installation, Allison Eden Studios transformed the timeless geometry of a nautilus shell into a monumental handcrafted glass mosaic mural, creating a spectacular focal point behind the home’s living room bar.
Inspired by one of nature’s most mesmerizing forms, the design spirals outward from its center in layers of luminous aqua, turquoise, sea glass, deep blue, iridescent glass and warm metallic accents. Hundreds of individually selected pieces work together to create movement and dimension, allowing the mosaic to subtly change as daylight, interior lighting and the viewer’s position shift.
This is not a repeating tile pattern. Every section of the nautilus was individually designed, cut and assembled by hand. The zero-repeat composition allows the curves and color gradations to flow organically across the wall, giving the finished installation the character of a commissioned work of art rather than a conventional tiled surface.
From the Brooklyn Studio to the Home
Creating a custom mosaic of this scale is an intensive process.
At Allison Eden Studios’ Brooklyn workshop, the original nautilus design was translated into hundreds of carefully positioned pieces of glass. Individual tesserae were selected for color, luminosity and texture, then painstakingly arranged to create the shell’s extraordinary sense of depth and movement.
