”Girls in Windows” is a large-scale stained glass mosaic artwork by Allison Eden, inspired by the visual spirit of Ormond Gigli’s iconic 1960 photograph Girls in the Windows.

Reinterpreted through Eden’s unmistakable language of hand-cut glass, color, fashion, and glamour, the composition features 15 individually crafted women, each posed within her own architectural window. Every figure has a distinct personality, wardrobe, palette, and presence, transforming the original photographic idea into an entirely new contemporary glass artwork.

Created over months of meticulous work at Allison Eden Studios in Brooklyn, the piece required extraordinary planning and craftsmanship. Each face, hairstyle, garment, hand, architectural frame, and background was assembled from carefully selected fragments of stained glass. The women were not treated as repeated motifs; each portrait was individually developed so that every figure reads as a unique character within the larger composition.

The craftsmanship becomes especially apparent at close range. Skin tones are built from numerous subtle pieces of glass, while clothing is articulated through changes in color, texture, translucency, and direction. Tiny shifts in glass placement create expression, posture, shadow, movement, and depth.

Surrounding the portraits, a luminous field of pale glass creates contrast and allows the individual women to emerge like figures framed in windows across a building façade. The finished composition balances portraiture, architecture, fashion, and mosaic craftsmanship on an ambitious scale.

Although inspired by a celebrated photographic image, Allison Eden’s interpretation is distinctly her own: a joyful celebration of women, individuality, style, and the enduring glamour of New York.

The artwork was handcrafted in Brooklyn and created for installation in a private residence, where it will become a dramatic focal point in a woman’s dressing room and closet- transforming a functional interior into an immersive work of art.
