Today, I’m thinking about Dolly Parton — not only the extraordinary entertainer the world knew and loved, but the woman behind it all.
Dolly came from incredibly humble beginnings in the mountains of Tennessee and built an extraordinary life through talent, determination, hard work and an unwavering belief in herself. But what I have always admired most is that her success never seemed to make her forget where she came from.
She gave back. She lifted people up. She encouraged children to read and dream. She showed generations of women that you could be glamorous and smart, creative and business-minded, ambitious and generous — all at the same time.
As a woman who has spent my own life building a creative business from the ground up, I have always found something incredibly inspiring in Dolly’s story.
Several years ago, I had the joy of creating this glass mosaic portrait of her in our Brooklyn studio. Looking at this photograph today means something entirely different.
It reminds me that the greatest legacy isn’t simply what we create or how successful we become.
It’s how many people we inspire along the way.
Thank you, Dolly, for the music, the laughter, the courage, the generosity, and for showing so many young women that there is no shame in dreaming BIG.
Your sparkle will be very, very hard to replace. ✨
